My Acne Journey: What Actually Changed My Skin

Nimisha Nailor Nimisha Nailor·

I've struggled with acne since I was 13 years old. For most of my life, it was something I simply learned to live with. Some months were better than others, but my skin was never truly clear, and I never felt fully comfortable in it. Then in 2024, it got worse than it had ever been. It went from something I managed to something that genuinely took over my life. I want to share what that was like, what I tried, and what finally made the difference.

Growing Up With Acne

When acne starts at 13, you're told it's just part of being a teenager. Everyone expects it to clear up once you're older, and for a while I believed that too. I waited for the day my skin would finally settle down. That day never really came.

As I got older, I realised my acne wasn't just a phase. It came and went in waves, and it always seemed to come back no matter what I did. Years later, I learned that it was connected to something much bigger. My acne was one of the many signs of PCOS, a hormonal condition that also affected my weight, my hair, my cycles and my energy. I've shared more about that in goat whey protein for PCOS.

When It Became Debilitating

In 2024, my skin reached a point I'd never experienced before. The breakouts were constant, painful and impossible to hide. I would wake up and check my skin before doing anything else, and most mornings I felt my heart sink.

It affected every part of my life. I started cancelling plans because I didn't want people to see my skin. I avoided photos at events and with friends, and if someone took one, I'd ask them not to post it. Even simple things like going out for a coffee started to feel exhausting. Looking back, I can see how much I was quietly withdrawing from the world around me.

People often talk about acne as a cosmetic issue, but anyone who has lived with it knows it's so much more than that. It affects your confidence, your relationships and how you show up every single day. It's incredibly isolating, especially when it feels like nothing you try is working.

What I Tried That Didn't Work

Like so many people, I tried almost everything before I found what worked for me.

The pill. I was put on the pill, which is a common treatment for hormonal acne. For some people, it genuinely helps. For me, it didn't give me the results I'd hoped for, and it never addressed what was actually happening underneath.

Expensive skincare. I spent so much money on skincare. Serums, cleansers, treatments and spot creams, many of them promising to change everything. Some made my skin feel nicer for a while, but none of them stopped the breakouts from coming back.

Facials. I booked facials hoping they would finally clear my skin. They were lovely in the moment, but within a few weeks, I was back where I started.

What I didn't understand then was that I was treating the surface of the problem. I was focusing entirely on my skin, when the real issue was happening inside my body.

The Turning Point

My turning point came when I started looking at my health as a whole, rather than treating each symptom separately. In 2024, I began researching how hormones, insulin resistance and inflammation were connected. The more I learned, the more I realised that my skin, my weight, my gut and my energy weren't separate problems. They were all linked.

So I changed my diet. I started paying much more attention to how food affected my blood sugar and my gut, and one of the biggest changes I made was switching from cow dairy to goat dairy. I've written about that decision in detail in why I created Kultra.

How Quickly Things Changed

What happened next genuinely surprised me. Within about a week of changing my diet, I noticed fewer new breakouts appearing. After years of constant flare-ups, even that small change felt huge. For the first time in a long time, I woke up without finding something new on my skin.

The bigger change took a little longer. After about two months, the improvement was really noticeable. My skin was calmer, the painful breakouts had eased, and I could finally see what my skin looked like without constant inflammation. I remember looking in the mirror one morning and realising I didn't feel the need to cover anything up.

Why Diet Can Affect Your Skin

I'm not a dermatologist, but I'm someone who needs to understand the why behind everything. So once I saw my skin changing, I wanted to understand what was happening.

Research has found links between acne and certain parts of our diet, particularly foods that cause big spikes in blood sugar. When blood sugar rises quickly, your body releases more insulin. Higher insulin levels can increase the production of androgens, the hormones that drive oil production in the skin. For people with PCOS and insulin resistance, this connection can be especially strong.

Dairy has also been studied in relation to acne. Some research has linked cow's milk consumption with breakouts, possibly because of its effect on hormones like insulin and IGF-1. The evidence is still developing, and it doesn't affect everyone in the same way, but for me, removing cow dairy was a meaningful part of the change.

The connection between gut health and skin is another area researchers are exploring. Many people with acne notice their skin flares alongside digestive issues, and I was definitely one of them. When my bloating eased after switching to goat dairy, my skin seemed to calm down at the same time. If you'd like to understand more about the difference between goat and cow dairy, I've laid out the research in goat whey vs cow whey: what the research actually says and what is A2 protein.

What This Has to Do With Kultra

When I changed my diet, protein became a big part of how I ate. It helped me steady my blood sugar and stay full between meals. The problem was finding a protein powder that didn't undo all my progress. Many protein powders are made with cow whey, along with sweeteners, gums and other additives, and I found they made my bloating worse.

That's a big part of why I created Kultra. I wanted a protein powder with just three ingredients: goat whey, vanilla bean and stevia. No gums, no sucralose and no fillers. If you've struggled with protein powders in the past, you might find the best protein powder for sensitive stomachs in the UK helpful, and why goat whey is the better whey explains why I chose goat whey.

I want to be honest, though. Kultra didn't clear my skin, and no single product will. What changed my skin was a combination of changes to my diet and my understanding of my body. Kultra was simply one part of making that way of eating easier to stick to.

What I'd Tell Anyone Struggling With Acne

If you're going through this right now, I want you to know that it's not your fault. Acne is not a sign that you're dirty, lazy or not trying hard enough. For many of us, it's a sign that something deeper is going on.

Here's what I wish someone had told me sooner. Try to look beyond your skin and at your health as a whole. Pay attention to patterns, like whether your skin flares alongside bloating, stress or certain foods. Be patient with any changes you make, because skin takes time to heal. And please speak to your GP or a dermatologist, especially if your acne is painful, scarring or affecting your mental health. Treatments that didn't work for me may work brilliantly for you, and there's no shame in getting support.

Where I Am Now

I still have days where my skin isn't perfect, and I've made peace with that. But I no longer feel controlled by it. I go to events, I say yes to plans and I don't panic when someone takes a photo. After so many years, that freedom means more to me than I can put into words.

If any of this sounds familiar, I see you. I was there too, and I know how heavy it can feel. Be gentle with yourself, and please don't give up on finding what works for your body.
